Power steering fluid is one of the many fluids flowing beneath the hood of your GM vehicle. Power steering fluid is used to operate the power steering system that allows your wheels to turn left and right. This fluid is also used to capture the lingering particles and dirt that can accumulate in the power steering system. A significant amount of corrosion from the particles can prevent the hydraulics in the system from properly functioning, and further preventing steering. During a power steering fluid exchange service, the old fluid is removed and the system is flushed to remove any build up and corrosion. Once the flushing is complete, the new power steering fluid is applied to the vehicle.
You should have this process completed periodically to prevent corrosion within the system. Initially, there will be a roar or growl that will descend from the power steering pump as it is attempting to function through the corrosion. Shortly, you will begin to have difficulties steering your vehicle from left to right. Depending on where the corrosion is building will determine which side is harder to steer.
